How to Accessorize Every Wedding Guest Dress Code With Jewelry
October 17, 2024 By Katelyn Rutt

Getting invited to a wedding is exciting, but finding an outfit that matches the requested dress code can be a bit of a challenge! While there aren’t strict rules for accessorizing your wedding attire, we have some tips to help you match the vibe. From the sophistication of black tie to the flair of cocktail attire and beyond, here’s the jewelry we’d recommend for some of the most common wedding guest dress codes.
Helpful Tip: It’s not your big day, so less is more. Stick to two fine jewelry pieces that enhance your ensemble. For daytime weddings in locations like a garden, country club, or winery, opt for brighter colors; for evening weddings, go for deeper hues that suit the ambiance. If you're unsure, check with the couple, visit their wedding website, or browse photos of the venue for guidance.
Black Tie

Aside from the rarely-used white tie, the black tie dress code is the most formal option. Black tie weddings typically take place in the late afternoon or evening and call for tuxedos and formal floor-length gowns in evening-appropriate fabrics such as velvet, chiffon, silk, or lace.
When accessorizing, keep it classic—opt for gold or platinum jewelry and timeless gemstones like diamonds and pearls. Statement necklaces, chunky studs, and drop earrings are great choices to subtly elevate your look without appearing flashy.
Black Tie Optional/Formal

Similar to black tie, black tie optional (or sometimes called formal) doesn’t require tuxedos, although they’re still encouraged. Women can wear evening gowns, but cocktail dresses are also a great choice.
This dress code is usually chosen by couples who are aiming for a formal feel but want to offer guests a bit more flexibility on the investment of black tie. Your fine jewelry options are similar, but can take a step down in formality. Just keep it classy and consider the couple’s color scheme if they’ve shared one!
Cocktail

This wedding dress code is all about having fun! Men can go for a tailored suit with or without a tie, while women can opt for a shorter cocktail dress. A little black dress works perfectly, but skip the sundress or anything made with casual fabrics.
We recommend forgoing the statement necklace and, instead, choosing a colorful fashion ring that matches your look. If you’re wearing a brighter color, you can always keep it classic with a few tasteful bangles or dangle earrings featuring neutral stones.
Semi-Formal, Dressy Casual, & Casual

These three dress codes are similar in nature, but think of them as more relaxed progressions from cocktail attire. Semi-formal and dressy casual are great for light sports coats, midi dresses, and jumpsuits. While "casual" may sound super laid-back, it doesn’t mean you should reach for sandals!
When it comes to jewelry, you don’t have to pull out your most extravagant pieces, but it is a great opportunity to style something fancier than your everyday jewels. Some examples are hoop earrings, layered necklaces, or a simpler gemstone piece. The goal is to keep it stylish, yet suitable for a more relaxed setting.
